Final data from financial statement statistics of credit institutions for 2009 have been released
At the end of 2009, domestic banks operating in Finland numbered 313. Of the domestic banks, 15 were commercial banks, 35 savings banks, and 263 co-operative banks. The banks had a total of 1,427 branch offices. There were 10 fewer banks and 45 fewer branch offices than at the end of 2008. This is indicated by final data from statistics concerning financial statements of credit institutions.
Impairment and credit losses of domestic banks, EUR million
In 2009, domestic banks’ impairment and credit losses 1) amounted to EUR 766 million. Their amount more than trebled from the previous year. The record year for impairment and credit losses was 1992, when domestic banks had EUR 3,592 of them. In 1992, the share of impairment and credit losses of domestic banks’ balance sheet total was 2.8 per cent. In 2009, the respective share was only 0.2 per cent because banks’ balance sheets are these days notably larger than in the 1990s. The strong rising of impairment and credit losses that had started in early 2008 moderated in the last quarter of 2009.
At the end of 2009, domestic banks employed 24,400 persons which is nearly four per cent fewer than one year earlier. Hours worked declined faster than the number of employees: they decreased by eight per cent from 2008. Despite the contracted numbers of employees and hours worked, the amount of remunerations paid to the employees went up
Concise preliminary data on the profit and loss statements and balance sheets of credit institutions were released on 1 April 2010. These preliminary data became slightly revised. Apart from on the profit and loss accounts and balance sheets of credit institutions this present release also contains data on the compositions of their expenditure and income items, key financial statement figures and numbers of employees.
In these statistics the concept of domestic bank refers to a deposit bank registered in Finland inclusive of its branch offices abroad. A list of all credit institutions covered by these statistics can be found in a separate appendix table.
