Students in upper secondary general school education numbered 117 300 in 2006
According to Statistics Finland, a total of 117,300 students attended upper secondary education leading to a qualification in 2006. The number of students continued to decrease and was one per cent lower than year before.
The proportion of women of all students attending education leading to a qualification was 57 per cent. There were 3,000 students who attended both upper secondary general education and vocational education simultaneously.

A total of 32,800 students passed the matriculation examination in 2006. The number went down by four per cent from the year before. In addition, International Baccalaureate examination was passed by 286 students in fourteen general upper secondary education schools, Reifeprüfung by 39 students in Helsingin saksalainen koulu (The German School of Helsinki) and gymnasieexamen by 40 students in Ålands lyceum.
