Number of students in upper secondary general school continued to decrease
According to Statistics Finland, a total of 109,000 students attended upper secondary general school education leading to qualification in 2011. The number of students continued to decrease and was 2.5 per cent lower than the year before. Fifty-seven per cent of the students in upper secondary general school education leading to a qualification were women. Upper secondary education was offered at 388 upper secondary schools and 45 other educational institutions.

A total of 32,400 students passed the matriculation examination in 2011. Their number was 0.3 per cent higher than the year before. In addition, the International Baccalaureate examination was passed by 362 students in 15 upper secondary schools, the Reifeprüfung examination by 31 students in the Helsingin saksalainen koulu (the German School of Helsinki) and the gymnasieexamen examination by one student in the Ålands lyceum.
