Number of students in upper secondary general education decreased further

According to Statistics Finland, a total of 105,900 students attended upper secondary general school education leading to qualification in 2013. The number of students decreased further and was 1.4 per cent lower than one year before. Fifty-seven per cent of the students in upper secondary general school education were women.

Of the students in upper secondary general school education in 2013, 104,200 studied the full upper secondary general school syllabus and 1,700 studied for an international matriculation examination. Upper secondary education was offered at 415 upper secondary schools and 6 folk high schools. Education in Swedish was offered in 37 upper secondary schools and six per cent of the students in upper secondary general school education studied at these schools.

A total of 31,700 students passed the matriculation examination in 2013. This was 0.3 per cent more than on the year earlier. Of the matriculation examinations, 31,600 were passed in upper secondary schools and 100 in folk high schools. Fifty-seven per cent of the students that passed the examinations were women. In addition, the International Baccalaureate examination was passed by 393 students in 16 upper secondary schools, the European Baccalaureate examination by 8 students at the Helsingin eurooppalainen koulu (the European Schooling Helsinki) and the Reifeprüfung by 31 students in the Helsingin saksalainen koulu (the German School of Helsinki).
