Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland decreased by 3 per cent in June
The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in June 2008 was nearly 523,000, which is 3 per cent down from June 2007. The number of nights spent by domestic tourists remained on level with the previous year. The total number of overnightings was just under 2.1 million. This was one per cent less than in the year before. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.
The growth in the number of nights spent by foreign tourists, which had continued throughout the first part of the year, stalled in June. Nights spent in Finland by visitors from all the most important inbound tourism countries decreased. Growth in inbound tourism to Finland in June 2008 came only from Russia, Germany, Estonia and Norway. Germans were the largest group of foreign visitors. They spent 84,000 nights at Finnish accommodation establishments. The number was 9 per cent higher than one year previously. Russian tourists' overnightings, however, increased the most, by 21.5 per cent, and with their 61,000 overnightings they were the second largest group of foreign visitors. Swedish tourists came third with nearly 60,000 overnight stays at accommodation establishments, which was 4 per cent down from June 2007. British and Spanish tourists' overnightings decreased strongly, by 18 and 22 per cent respectively, from June 2007.
