Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland decreased by 4 per cent in July
The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in July 2008 was 713,000, which is 4 per cent down from July 2007. The number of nights spent by domestic tourists remained on level with the previous year. The total number of overnightings was 3 million. This was one per cent less than in the year before. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.
The number of foreign tourists' overnightings in Finnish accommodation establishments started to fall in June and continued to do so in July. Only Russian tourists spent more nights and Estonians the same number of nights than in July of 2007. Nights spent in Finland by visitors from the other most important inbound tourism countries decreased from the year before. Swedish tourists were the largest group of foreign visitors. They spent 122,000 nights at Finnish accommodation establishments. This was 5 per cent less than in the year before. Russian tourists' overnightings increased by one-fifth, and with their 104,000 overnightings they were the second largest group of foreign visitors. German tourists came third with 92,000 overnight stays at accommodation establishments, which was 6 per cent less than in July 2007. Norwegian tourists' overnightings decreased strongly, by 25 from July 2007.
