Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland up by 4 per cent in October

The number of recorded nights spent by non-resident tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in October 2008 was 306,000, which was 4 per cent up on October 2007. The number of nights spent by resident tourists increased by one per cent. The total number of nights spent was 1.3 million, which was just short of 2 per cent up on the year before. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Nights spent by Russian tourists increased most, by 27 per cent, in October and as expected they were the largest group of foreign visitors. A total of 51,000 overnightings were recorded for them. The next largest group were Swedish visitors with nearly 35,000 nights spent. Their overnightings increased by one per cent from the year before. Germans came third with 30,000 nights spent, which was one per cent down on October 2007. Nights spent by Italian and French visitors increased by 9 - 11 per cent. By contrast, overnightings of visitors from the United States, Estonia and Japan fell by 11 -13 per cent from the year before. Smaller changes took place in the nights spent by visitors from the other most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland.
