Nights spent by tourists decreased by 8 per cent in March

The number of nights spent by tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments decreased by 8 per cent in March when compared with one year ago. The number of nights spent by foreign tourists decreased by 15 per cent and that of nights spent by domestic tourists by 5 per cent. The total number of overnight stays remained at just under 1.5 million, of which 76 per cent, or 1.1 million, were overnight stays of domestic tourists. The remaining 360,000 were overnight stays of foreign tourists. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Tourism to Finland from all the most important inbound tourism countries decreased when compared with March 2008. The decrease was biggest in visitors from the USA (46%), Spain (40%), UK (32%) and Norway (27%). Despite a 6 per cent decrease in their number, Russian visitors were still the largest group of foreign tourists in Finnish accommodation establishments. A total of 61,800 overnight stays were recorded for Russian visitors in March 2009. German visitors were the second-largest group with 41,000 overnight stays, which was just under two per cent less than one year previously. British visitors made up the third-largest group with 37,000 overnight stays. The next-largest groups were Swedish visitors with just under 29,000 overnight stays and French visitors with 25,000 overnight stays. The number of overnightings by Swedish tourists decreased by over 5 per cent and that of French tourists by 14 per cent.

The standard industrial classification TOL 2008 was introduced in these Tourism Statistics starting from data concerning January 2009. The introduction has caused minor changes to data on the number of establishments in hotel statistics. Further information about the TOL 2008 classification is available at TOL 2008 section.
