Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland decreased by 9 per cent in October
The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in October 2009 was 280,000, which was nine per cent lower than in October 2008. The number of nights spent by Finnish tourists fell by one per cent from the previous year; their overnight stays at accommodation establishments totalled slightly more than 1.0 million. The total number of overnight stays decreased by three per cent from one year back and accommodation establishments recorded a total of 1.3 million of them in October 2009. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.
The number of nights spent by foreign tourists at accommodation establishments in Finland continued to decrease in October. Only the number of nights stayed over by British tourists went up; a good 20,000 of them were recorded in October 2009. The number was five per cent higher than in October 2008. Russians, however, were the largest group of foreign tourists with almost 48,000 stays overnight, even if there was a seven-per cent decrease in comparison with last year. Germans and Swedes were the next largest groups, and each group was recorded to have stayed almost 30,000 nights in Finland. Overnight stays by German tourists decreased by three per cent and those by Swedes by 16 per cent. The number of overnight stays by French tourists also showed a considerable decrease of 14 per cent compared with the figures for October 2008. The number of nights stayed over by Norwegians and Italians fell by 12 per cent from last year.

The standard industrial classification TOL 2008 was introduced in these Tourism Statistics starting from data concerning January 2009. The introduction has caused minor changes to data on the number of establishments in hotels statistics.
