Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland up by 1.9 per cent in July 2013
The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in July 2013 was nearly 747,000, which was 1.9 per cent more than in July 2012. Overnight stays by resident tourists numbered good 2.3 million. The number was almost the same as one year earlier, as growth only amounted to 0.3 per cent compared to July 2012. The total number of overnight stays increased by 0.7 per cent from last year and altogether good three million overnight stays were recorded at accommodation establishments in July 2013. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Nights spent at Finnish accommodation establishments by Russian visitors increased by 7.8 per cent in July 2013 and, as expected, they were the largest group of foreign visitors with 168,000 overnight stays. Swedes came next with 123,000 overnight stays and a growth of seven per cent from one year earlier. Germans were in the third position with 84,000 overnight stays. However, the number was 10.1 per cent lower than in July 2012. Nearly 39,000 overnight stays were recorded for Norwegians, a drop of 7.3 per cent from one year ago. By contrast, overnight stays recorded for British visitors increased by 17.7 per cent and totalled 28,000. Tourism from Asian countries increased heavily. Overnight stays by Japanese tourists increased most, by 46.5 per and they spent nearly 24,000 nights at Finnish accommodation establishments. Nearly 17,000 overnight stays were recorded for Chinese visitors, which was 44.5 per cent more than one year before. By contrast, among the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland, overnight stays by Dutch tourists decreased the most, by 21.0 per cent. Overnight stays by Spanish and Estonian visitors also decreased heavily, by 11 to 14 per cent from 2012.
By region, the total number of overnight stays increased most in July in the regions of Etelä-Savo, up by 15.7 per cent, and Kainuu, up by 9.7 per cent. Overnight stays increased by 6.9 per cent in North Karelia and by 5.5 per cent in Kymenlaakso. Overnight stays decreased most in Kanta-Häme, by 11.7 per cent, and in Varsinais-Suomi, by 7.3 per cent. The total number of overnight stays at all Finnish accommodation establishments in July was 0.7 per cent higher than one year earlier.

Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finnish hotels increased by 1.4 per cent in July 2013
The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish hotels in July 2013 was nearly 521,000, which was 1.4 per cent higher than one year earlier. By contrast, overnight stays by domestic tourists decreased by 0.4 per cent and hotels recorded nearly 1.5 million of them. The total number of nights spent in hotels remained on level with the previous year and altogether nearly two million overnight stays were recorded in July 2013.
The occupancy rate of hotel rooms was 59.4 per cent in July. One year earlier, it was 59.0 per cent. Among the regions, the highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms were measured in Åland, 79.1 per cent, and Varsinais-Suomi, 71.4 per cent. In Mariehamn, the hotel room occupancy rate was 89.3 per cent and in Turku 78.3 per cent. Hotel room occupancy rate in Helsinki was 71.4 per cent.
In July 2013, the realised average price of a hotel room was EUR 84.25 per day for the whole country. Twelve months previously, it was EUR 83.72.

Between January and July 2013, the number of nights spent at accommodation establishments in Finland totalled good 12.4 million, which was 0.4 per cent down on the respective time period of last year. Overnight stays by resident tourists decreased by 0.6 per cent and accommodation establishments recorded nearly 9 million of them. Overnight stays by foreign tourists numbered 3.5 million, which was almost the same as in January to July 2012.
Nearly 992,000 nights spent at Finnish accommodation establishments were recorded for Russians, and they were by far the largest group of foreign visitors in January to July 2013. Overnight stays of Russian visitors increased by 6.6 per cent from the respective time period of last year. The second largest group was Swedish visitors. A total of 333,000 overnight stays were recorded for them, which was almost the same as in January to July 2012. German visitors made up the third largest group with good 324,000 overnight stays. Overnight stays by German visitors have also decreased and 6.6 per cent fewer overnight stays were recorded for them at accommodation establishments than in January to July 2012. By contrast, overnight stays by British tourists have increased heavily throughout the current year and in January to July, 12.2 per cent more stays were recorded for them than in the corresponding period in 2012. The number of overnight stays by British visitors rose to 229,000. Among the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland, overnight stays by visitors from China and Japan increased most. Overnight stays by Chinese tourists increased by 24.0 per cent and those by Japanese tourists by 20.5 per cent. By contrast, overnight stays by Estonian tourists decreased heavily and good 107,000 overnight stays were recorded for them at accommodation establishments in January to July 2013, which was 24.0 less than in the corresponding time period in 2012.
