Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland up by 7.2 per cent in November 2013

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in November 2013 was nearly 381,500, which was 7.2 per cent more than in November 2012. Overnight stays by resident tourists numbered nearly one million. The number was 0.6 per cent higher than one year previously. The total number of overnight stays increased by 2.4 per cent from the year before. Accommodation establishments recorded a total of 1.3 million of them in November 2013. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Nights spent at Finnish accommodation establishments by Russian visitors increased by 14.5 per cent in November 2013, and they were by far the largest group of foreign visitors with nearly 128,000 overnight stays. Swedish and German visitors made up the next biggest groups. Altogether, 31,000 overnight stays were recorded for Swedish visitors, which was 2.6 per cent more than twelve months earlier. Overnight stays by German tourists remained on the level of November 2012 and 25,000 overnight stays were recorded for them, up by just 0.6 per cent. Overnight stays by British and American tourists increased strongly in November 2013. Good 23,000 overnight stays at accommodation establishments were recorded for British visitors, which was 13.9 per cent more than one year before. Overnight stays recorded for visitors from the United States increased by 12.6 per cent and totalled 11,000. Among the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland, overnight stays by visitors from China increased most, however. Their total number of overnight stays at accommodation establishments was close to 7,000, which was 22.1 per cent more than in the year before. In contrast, the strong fall in overnight stays by Estonian visitors continued in November 2013 and 11.5 per cent fewer overnight stays at accommodation establishments were recorded for them than in November 2012. Overnight stays by Dutch and French tourists both decreased by seven per cent from the previous year.

By region, the total number of overnight stays in November 2013 increased most in the regions of Kymenlaakso, up by 28.7 per cent, and Central Ostrobothnia, up by 21.8 per cent. In South Karelia, overnight stays went up by 11.7 per cent. Eight per cent more overnight stays than in November 2012 were recorded in both Etelä-Savo and South Ostrobothnia. By contrast, overnight stays decreased by 15 per cent in Åland and by 8.2 per cent in Ostrobothnia. The number of overnight stays in the whole country recorded at accommodation establishments rose by 2.4 per cent in November 2013 from one year earlier.

Overnight stays in hotels increased by 1.8 per cent in November 2013

In November 2013, the total number of nights spent in hotels was 1.2 million, which was 1.8 per cent higher than twelve months earlier. Overnight stays recorded for resident tourists at accommodation establishments numbered 865,000, which was nearly the same as in November 2012. Overnight stays by foreign tourists increased by 6.5 per cent and hotels recorded a total of 336,000 of them.

The occupancy rate of hotel rooms was 51.2 per cent in November. One year earlier, it was 51.4 per cent. Among the regions, the highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms were measured in Uusimaa, 64.7 per cent, and Kymenlaakso, 63.4 per cent. In Kotka, the hotel room occupancy rate was 71.6 per cent and in Vantaa 69.0 per cent. The hotel room occupancy rate in Helsinki was 70.6 per cent.

In November 2013, the realised average price of a hotel room was EUR 91.04 per day for the whole country. Twelve months previously it was EUR 91.25.

Total number of nights spent at all accommodation establishments fell by 0.5 per cent in January to November 2013

Between January and November 2013, the number of nights spent at accommodation establishments in Finland totalled 18.9 million, which was 0.5 per cent down on the respective period of last year. Overnight stays by resident tourists decreased by 0.9 per cent and accommodation establishments recorded close on 13.6 million of them. Overnight stays by foreign tourists numbered 5.3 million, which was 0.8 per cent more than in January to November 2012.

Nearly 1.5 million nights spent at Finnish accommodation establishments were recorded for Russians and, as usual, they were the largest group of foreign visitors in January to November 2013. Overnight stays of Russian visitors increased by 8.5 per cent from the respective period of last year. The second largest group was Swedish visitors. A total of 511,000 overnight stays were recorded for them, which was one per cent fewer than in January to November 2012. German visitors made up the third largest group with 474,000 overnight stays. Overnight stays by German visitors made a downturn in June and 6.6 per cent fewer overnight stays at accommodation establishments were still recorded for them than in January to November 2012. By contrast, overnight stays by British tourists have increased at the yearly rate of over ten per cent and in January to November, 12.3 per cent more stays were recorded for them than in the corresponding period in 2012. The number of overnight stays by British visitors rose to nearly 327,000. Tourism from Asian countries has been growing and of the most important countries of inbound tourism into Finland, overnight stays by Chinese and Japanese visitors increased most. Overnight stays by Chinese tourists increased by 27.3 per cent and those by Japanese tourists by 17.6 per cent. By contrast, overnight stays by Estonian tourists continued to decrease and 172,000 overnight stays were recorded for them at accommodation establishments in January to November 2013, which was 21.0 per cent lower than in the corresponding time period last year.
