Nights spent by resident tourists increased by 5 per cent in April 2019
Overnight stays by resident tourists increased by 5.0 per cent at Finnish accommodation establishments from last year and 1.23 million nights were recorded for them in April 2019. This was partially affected by Easter being in April this year. By contrast, overnight stays by foreign tourists decreased by 2.8 per cent and 0.36 million overnight stays were recorded for non-resident tourists. Finnish accommodation establishments recorded a total of 1.59 million overnight stays, which was 3.1 per cent more than one year before. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

Overnight stays by tourists from the U.S. increased most in April 2019
Among non-resident tourists, overnight stays by tourists from the U.S. increased most in absolute numbers. Overnight stays by tourists from the U.S. grew by 4,900 nights, which was 38 per cent more than one year earlier. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Russians. Overnight stays by Russians decreased by 7,600 nights, which was 16 per cent less than in April 2018.
However, the biggest group of non-resident tourists in April was Russians with 41,500 overnight stays. The second largest group was Swedes with 38,800 overnight stays. Germans with 27,800 overnight stays came third and tourists from Britain came fourth with 20,800 overnight stays. The fifth largest group was tourists from the U.S. (17,900 nights), sixth was Norwegians (17,700 nights), seventh Estonian tourists (15,700 nights) and eight Chinese tourists (14,100 nights).
Overnight stays increased most in April 2019 in Kainuu
Examined by region, overnight stays increased most in relative terms in Kainuu by 16 per cent, and second most in South Savo by 11 per cent. By contrast, the overall number of overnight stays decreased most in relative terms in South Karelia by 13 per cent and second most in Satakunta by 10 per cent.
Accommodation establishments in Uusimaa recorded 208,000 overnight stays by non-resident tourists and accommodation establishments in Lapland 52,000. Overnight stays by non-resident tourists increased by 3.6 per cent in Uusimaa and by 3.1 per cent in Lapland from one year ago. The share of Uusimaa in all overnight stays by foreign visitors was 58 per cent and that of Lapland 15 per cent.

Overnight stays in hotels increased by 3.1 per cent in April 2019
In April, the total number of nights spent in hotels was 1.32 million, which was 3.1 per cent more than twelve months earlier. Overnight stays by foreign tourists decreased by 1.5 per cent and hotels recorded a total of 0.31 million of them. Recorded nights spent by resident tourists in hotels numbered 1.00 million. The number was 4.7 per cent higher than in April 2018.
There was a total of 54,185 hotel rooms available, which was 1,819 more than in April 2018.
The hotel room occupancy rate was 49.4 per cent having been 52.0 per cent twelve months earlier. Among the regions, the highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms were measured in Uusimaa, 60.3 per cent, and Pirkanmaa, 52.6 per cent. In Helsinki, the hotel room occupancy rate was 65.6 per cent, 58.1 per cent in Tampere, 57.4 per cent in Turku, 58.0 per cent in Oulu and 33.7 per cent in Rovaniemi.
In 2019 April, the realised average price of a hotel room was EUR 98.99 per day for the whole country. Twelve months earlier, it was EUR 98.07.

Total number of nights spent grew by 1.3 per cent in January to April 2019
In January to April 2019, a total of 6.74 million nights were spent in Finnish accommodation establishments. This was 1.3 per cent higher than in the corresponding period one year earlier. In all, 4.54 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and 2.20 million for non-resident tourists at accommodation establishments. The number of nights spent by resident tourists increased by 2.1 per cent and that of nights spent by non-resident tourists decreased by 0.4 per cent year-on-year.
Among non-resident tourists, overnight stays by French tourist increased most in absolute numbers. Overnight stays by French tourists grew by 20,100 nights, which was 13 per cent more than one year earlier. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Russians. Overnight stays by Russians decreased by 40,000 nights, which was 12 per cent less than in January to April 2018.
The biggest group of non-resident tourists in January to April 2019 was Russians with 290,000 overnight stays. The second largest group was Germans with 194,000 overnight stays. Britons were third with 185,000 nights spent. The fourth largest group was French tourists (176,000 nights), fifth was Dutch tourists (129,000 nights), sixth Chinese tourists (121,000 nights), seventh Swedish tourists (121,000 bights) and eight Estonian tourists (73,000 nights).
