Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland decreased by 53 per cent in March 2020

Due to the market situation caused by the coronavirus, overnight stays by resident tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments declined by 44.3 per cent from last year and 0.72 million nights were recorded for them in March 2020. Overnight stays by foreign tourists declined by 53.0 per cent and 0.27 million overnight stays were recorded for non-resident tourists. Finnish accommodation establishments recorded a total of 0.99 million overnight stays, which was 46.9 per cent lower than one year before. Forty-three per cent of the hotels having reported data for March said they had already closed before the end of the month. The closed hotels were open in March for 24 days, on average. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

Overnight stays by Russians decreased most in March 2020

The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Russians , down by 37,500 nights. Their overnight stays were 60.0 per cent down on March 2019.

The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Germans with 35,400 overnight stays. The second largest group was French with 29,300 overnight stays. The third largest group was Russians with 25,000 overnight stays, and fourth were Dutch tourists with 19,300 overnight stays. The fifth largest group was Britons (16,400 nights), sixth was Swedes (11,800 nights), seventh U.S. tourists (9,800 nights) and eight Estonians (9,300 nights).

In Uusimaa, overnight stays by non-resident tourists decreased by 59 per cent in March 2020

Overnight stays declined in each region, but the smallest drop in relative terms was in Kainuu, where overnight stays decreased by 31.0 per cent. By contrast, the overall number of overnight stays declined most in relative terms in Kanta-Häme, by 66.0 per cent and second most in Åland, by 65.8 per cent.

Accommodation establishments in Uusimaa recorded 81,000 overnight stays by non-resident tourists and accommodation establishments in Lapland 119,000. Overnight stays by non-resident tourists declined by 59.2 per cent in Uusimaa. In Lapland, overnight stays by non-resident tourists declined by 45.7 per cent from one year ago. The share of Uusimaa in all overnight stays by foreign visitors was 31 per cent and that of Lapland 45 per cent.

Overnight stays in hotels decreased by 49 per cent in March 2020

The total number of nights spent in hotels was 0.79 million, which was 48.8 per cent less than twelve months earlier. Overnight stays by foreign tourists declined by 52.8 per cent and hotels recorded a total of 229,000 overnight stays for them. Recorded nights spent by resident tourists in hotels numbered 0.56 million. The number was 47.0 per cent lower than in March 2019.

Among the regions, the highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms were measured in Kainuu, 47.1 per cent, and in Lapland, 43.7 per cent. In Helsinki, the hotel room occupancy rate was 30.2 per cent, 29.4 per cent in Tampere, 35.9 per cent in Turku, 39.8 per cent in Oulu and 37.5 per cent in Rovaniemi.

In March 2020, the realised average price of a hotel room was EUR 112.19 per day for the whole country. Twelve months earlier, it was EUR 110.85. There was a total of 54,292 hotel rooms available in Finland, which was 310 more than in March 2019.

Total number of nights spent decreased by 12.5 per cent in January to March 2020

In January to March 2020, a total of 4.5 million nights were spent in Finnish accommodation establishments. This was 12.5 per cent less than in the corresponding period one year earlier. In all, 2.91 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and 1.59 million for non-resident tourists. The number of nights spent by resident tourists declined by 11.6 per cent and nights spent by non-resident tourists declined by 14.0 from the previous year.

Overnight stays declined from all of the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland. The smallest drop was seen in overnight stays by Japanese tourists . Overnight stays by them declined by 2 400 nights. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Chinese tourists, down by 35,500 nights. Their overnight stays were 33.2 per cent down on January to March 2019.

The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Russians with 240,000 overnight stays. The second largest group was Germans with 152,000 overnight stays. The third largest group was French with 145,000 overnight stays , and fourth were Britons with 143,000 overnight stays. The fifth largest group was Dutch tourists (113,000 nights), sixth was Chinese tourists (71,000 nights), seventh Swedes (60,000 nights) and eight was U.S. tourists (51,000 nights).
