In January 2009 the number of new passenger cars registered was 11,540

In January 2009 a total of17,372 new motor vehicles were registered, of which 13,386 were automobiles. First registrations decreased by 40.5 per cent from the corresponding month of the previous year. In January the number of new passenger cars registered was 11,540, which was 46.4 per cent down from the year before. The share of new diesel-driven passenger cars was 50.4 per cent. Comparisons of first registrations in January 2008 and 2009 should allow for a revision in vehicle taxation which took effect as of the beginning of 2008, in consequence of first registrations of thousands of vehicles became postponed from late 2007 to 2008.These data are based on the Vehicular and Driver Data Register of the Finnish Vehicle Administration and they have been produced by Statistics Finland. The numbers are exclusive of the vehicles on the Åland Islands.

The most common passenger car makes first registered in January were Volkswagen, Toyota and Ford. The most common passenger car models were Volkswagen  Golf, Toyota  Avensis, Skoda  Octavia and Ford  Focus.
