Vehicle stock grew in 2020

At the end of 2020, the Finnish vehicle register contained 6,926,137 vehicles, of which 5,172,173 were in traffic use. The total number of registered vehicles grew by 2.1 per cent and the number of vehicles in traffic use grew by 0.9 per cent compared with the situation at the end of 2019. At the end of 2020, the vehicle register of the Åland Islands contained 51,111 vehicles. These data, compiled by Statistics Finland, are based on the traffic affairs register of the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) and the vehicle register of Ålands Fordonsmyndigheten.

At the end of 2020, there were 3,632,851 passenger cars in the register, of which 2,773,768 were in traffic use. The number of registered passenger cars went up by 1.6 per cent and the number of passenger cars in traffic by one per cent. The number of registered passenger cars was growing most in the region of North Ostrobothnia and least in the region of Kymenlaakso.

In 2020, a total of 96,417 new passenger cars were first registered in Mainland Finland and 43,904 used passenger cars were imported to Finland. A total of 71,418 passenger cars were removed from the register. The average age of registered passenger cars in Mainland Finland was 15.6 years and that of cars in traffic use was 12.5 years. The lowest average age of registered passenger cars was 12.9 years in the region of Uusimaa and highest 18.0 years in the region of Kainuu.

At the end of 2020, there were 9,959 electric passenger cars and 46,538 plug-in hybrid electric cars. The number of electric cars grew by 106 per cent and that of plug-in hybrid electric cars by 85 per cent from the previous year. The combined share of electric cars and plug-in electric cars was 1.6 per cent of all passenger cars in the register.

The most common models of passenger cars in the register of Mainland Finland were Toyota Corolla (around 153,000), Volkswagen Golf (about 130,000) and Skoda Octavia (approx. 91,000).
