Gross domestic product grew by 2.9 per cent in the third quarter of 2005

The volume of GDP grew by 2.9 per cent in the third quarter of 2005 compared with the previous quarter. The growth of the economy in comparison with the previous quarter was increased by the industrial action in the paper industry during the reference period. Compared with the third quarter of 2004, GDP was up by 2.1 per cent, and adjusted seasonally, the corresponding change in GDP from twelve months before was 1.9 per cent. In the January to September period, GDP was 1.5 per cent higher than one year previously. This appears from the preliminary National Accounts data compiled by Statistics Finland.

The demand of the national economy was increased by household consumption and exports. In the July to September period, private consumption grew by 5 per cent from one year ago. Purchases of furniture and especially of household appliances and electronics as well as of cars were plentiful. Fixed investments grew by 2 per cent. Construction investments increased by 6 per cent, whereas investments in machinery and equipment contracted by 6 per cent. Imports were 8 per cent up on the year before and the volume of exports grew by nearly 9 per cent.
