Almost 1.3 million students aim at a qualification or degree

Correction to release made on 19 Jan. 2007. Figures for 2000 and 2001 on qualifications in upper secondary general school education corrected on 25 Jan. 2008.

In 2005, the total number of students in education leading to a qualification or degree was 1,260,000, almost half of whom attended comprehensive school education, almost one-third vocational or upper secondary general education and one-quarter polytechnic or university education. The total number of students in education leading to a qualification or degree has been growing throughout the 2000s, but the direction of the development has varied in different sectors of education. In comprehensive and upper secondary general school education the number of students has fallen as age cohorts have grown smaller. By contrast, the number of students attending vocational education has been going up continuously as vocational education intended for adults has increased. In university education and especially in polytechnic education the rate of growth in the number of students has slowed down. Preliminary data for autumn 2006 also indicate that the development in the different educational sectors is likely continue in the same direction as described above. These data derive from education statistics compiled by Statistics Finland.

The total number of qualifications and degrees attained in 2005 was 197,000, which is good one per cent more than in the year before. The average age for passing matriculation examination was 19, and the median age for attaining a vocational qualification was 21. On the average, polytechnic degrees were obtained at the age of 26, and higher university degrees at the age of 27.
