Employment during studies grows even more widespread

Employment among students grew more widespread again in 2007. Approximately 60 per cent of students attending vocational, polytechnic and university education were employed during their studies. Emplolyment increased most, or by 3.5 percentage points from the previous year, among students in vocational education. However, some studies in vocational education are completed in an employment relationship. Among polytechnic students employment increased by just short of three percentage points and among university students by just under two percentage points from the previous year. Employment also became widespread among students attending upper secondary general education.

Employment during studies becomes the more common the older the students are. Twenty-five per cent of the 18-year-old and 50 per cent of the 22-year-old or older students were employed during studies. Employment of students during studies varies by field of education. Eightly-one per cent of students in the field of Safety and Security and 71 per cent of students in the fields of Social Sciences, and Business and Administration were employed. In the fields of Welfare, Health and Sport 63 per cent of students and in the field of Hotel, Catering and Home Economics 61 per cent of students were employed. Employment during studies was more common than the average for the country in the regions of Uusimaa, Itä-Uusimaa, Kanta-Häme, Varsinais-Suomi, Pirkanmaa and Ostrobothnia.
