Employment and security activities growing most in service industries

According to Statistics Finland, turnover in service industries grew by 3.9 per cent in March to May from the corresponding period of the year before. One year previously, turnover went up by 3.6 per cent over the same period. All main service industries and nearly all sub-industries of services grew from one year back. Turnover grew most strongly in employment and security activities. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

Among the main service industries, development was most favourable in administration and support services activities, where turnover increased by 9.9 per cent from one year ago. Of the sub-industries of administrative and support service activities, employment activities (+19.4%) and security and investigation activities (+17.0%) grew fastest. Professional, scientific and technical activities also developed favourably (+9.1%). Within this industry, best growth was attained by industries engaged in business activities (+10.7%) and architectural and engineering activities (+10.4%).

Among the main service industries, weakest development was recorded for transportation and storage, whose turnover remained almost on level with the previous year, growth being just 0.2 per cent. Among the sub-industries, development was most favourable in land and rail transport (+2.7%) and warehousing and support activities for transportation (+2.4%), while turnover in water transport contracted (-4.4%).

Growth in information and communication also remained modest in March to May (+1.2%). Only information service enterprises did well in the industry, as they increased their turnover by 14.6 per cent from the year before. The turnover of computer programming enterprises grew by just 1.9 per cent, while turnover was falling in telecommunications, radio and television activities and publishing activities.
