Turnover in service industries increased by 3.4 per cent year-on-year in May to July

According to Statistics Finland, turnover in service industries grew by 3.4 per cent in May to July from the corresponding period of the year before. One year previously, turnover in service industries increased by 3.2 per cent over the same period. Apart from transportation and storage activities (-0.6%), all other main industries continued to grow. Administrative and support service activities (+8.6%) that had topped the list were overtaken by professional, scientific and technical activities with an 8.8 per cent growth. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

Three months' year-on-year change in turnover in services  (TOL 2008)

In the main industry of professional, scientific and technical activities, research and development showed the strongest growth (+13.9%). Advertising and market research continued to grow and reached an 8.2 per cent increase in May to July. One year previously, turnover in the industry contracted by 1.9 per cent.

The turnover growth of administrative and support service activities was still boosted most by employment activities (+18%). Security and investigation activities also continued to grow (+14.8%), as did renting and leasing activities (+10.5%).

Development was weakest in the main industry of transportation and storage activities (-0.6%), and among the sub-industries, the turnover of water transport plummeted by 8.1 per cent. In the main industry of information and communication activities, growth was still subdued (+0.4%). Among its sub-industries, information services activities continued to generate the highest growth (+9.8%).
