Share of manufactured products in output smallest among manufacturing industries in the electronics industry in 2013
According to Statistics Finland's input-output statistics, the share of manufactured products in output was smallest among manufacturing industries in the electronics industry in 2013. Only 21.1 per cent of the industry's output was production of manufactured products, while the average share among manufacturing industries was 84.3 per cent. A majority of the output in the electronics industry comprises factoryless manufacturing.

Factoryless manufacturing refers to an activity where an enterprise has no actual manufacturing of an industrial product in the home country, but planning, research, product development, administration and marketing recorded in service output are located in the home country. The enterprise contracts out the processing of the actual product abroad and gains significant added value from product planning and research and development work, for example. As recently as in 2008, one-half of the electronics industry's domestic output was industrial products. The decrease in the share is the result of a heavy decline in domestic production of computers, electronic and optical products (CPA 26).
The share of industrial products in output was below 90 per cent also in pharmaceutical industry, manufacture of electrical equipment and manufacture of other machinery and equipment. Also in these industries, the service output has been boosted by scientific research and development services, as well as partial transfer of product manufacturing abroad.
Industrial products (CPA 10 to 33) include, in addition to industrially manufactured products, processing and manufacturing services of products, and repair, maintenance and installation services of machinery and equipment.
Statistics Finland publishes annually the supply and use tables describing product flows in the national economy, and the input-output and analysis tables derived from them. The data published now concern the year 2013. Tables concerning 2014 will be published in December 2016.
