Revised industrial classification TOL 2008 to be introduced in producer price indices for services in April 2009

A revised industrial classification, TOL 2008, will be introduced in Finnish statistics in 2009. General information about the transition is given on the TOL 2008 pages of the Statistics section of our website. The Classifications pages of the Metadata section of the website contain more detailed information about TOL 2008, such as its contents and classification principles.

The classification will be introduced in April 2009 in the Producer Price Index for Services describing the first quarter of 2009. Data according to TOL 2002 will remain available in the database services of the home page of the statistics for one year.

Changes in service industry sections arising from the transition to TOL 2008

Under the new industrial classification the four main industries previously published in the Producer Price Index for Services will be replaced by seven main industries.

The main industries published under the TOL 2002 classification are

• Hotels and restaurants (TOL 2002 H)
• Transport, storage and communication (TOL 2002 I)
• Real estate, renting and business activities (TOL 2002 K)
• Other community, social and personal service activities (TOL 2002 O)

The main industries published under the TOL 2008 classification are

• Transport and storage (TOL 2008 H)
• Accommodation and food service activities (TOL 2008 I)
• Information and communication (TOL 2008 J)
• Real estate activities (TOL 2008 L)
• Professional, scientific and technical activities (TOL 2008 M)
• Administrative and support service activities (TOL 2008 N)
• Other service activities (TOL 2008 S).

Retrospective data starting from 2005 will be published on the development of all the above listed main industries according to the new industrial classification.

The contents of the TOL 2008 sections are different from those of the TOL 2002 sections. The exception is Accommodation and food service activities, or section I, which is practically identical to the earlier industry H.

For example, the new section Information and communication (TOL 2008 J) will include

• sub-category Telecommunications from section Transport, storage and communication (TOL 2002 I)
• Sub-industries Computer programming, consultancy and related activities (previously Computer and related activities) from section Real estate, renting and business activities (TOL2002 K).
