Cubic volume covered by granted building permits decreased by 17 per cent in April

In April 2010, building permits were granted for a total of 3.2 million cubic metres, which is 17 per cent less than one year ago. This is indicated by Statistics Finland’s preliminary data from statistics on building and dwelling production.

However, the cubic volume covered by permits for residential buildings grew by nearly 35 per cent and the volume covered by permits for detached houses in particular increased by 56 per cent from the previous year’s April. The cubic volume covered by permits for public service buildings also showed growth and especially that for buildings in the field of health care and social services almost doubled. The cubic volume covered by permits for commercial and office buildings, in turn, decreased by 60 per cent from one year back.

In April 2010, building permits were granted for 2,700 new dwellings, which is good one-fifth more than one year earlier. The number of permits granted for new detached houses went up by nearly 60 per cent and even permits for terraced houses increased by one-quarter from April 2009. The number of permits granted for residential blocks of flats decreased by 8 per cent.I

Over the January to April period, the number of granted building permits decreased by 6 per cent from the previous year. The cubic volume covered by permits for commercial and office buildings, and that for agricultural buildings halved from the respective time period of the year before. The cubic volume covered by permits for residential buildings went up by 75 per cent.

Volume of newbuilding grew by good 5 per cent in April

In April 2010, ongoing building production grew by 5.5 per cent year-on-year.

The volume of residential buildings went up by 59 per cent from one year before. In residential building, especially the volume of blocks of flats grew by nearly 71 per cent, while the volumes of terraced and detached houses increased by good 63 and 53 per cent, respectively, from one year back.

The volume of other than residential building contracted further. The drop from April 2009 amounted to nearly 20 per cent.

The volume of industrial buildings contracted most, by good 50 per cent, and the construction of office buildings also decreased by over 40 per cent from one year earlier.
