Cubic volume covered by granted building permits grew by 12 per cent in May

In May 2010, building permits were granted for a total of 4.3 million cubic metres, which is 12 per cent more than one year ago. This is indicated by Statistics Finland’s preliminary data from statistics on building and dwelling production.I

The cubic volume covered by permits for residential buildings grew by 56 per cent and in particular, the cubic volume of terraced houses tripled compared with the previous year’s May. The cubic volume covered by permits for industrial and warehouse buildings and public service buildings was also growing. The cubic volume covered by permits for commercial and office buildings, in turn, decreased by around 50 per cent from one year back.

In May 2010, building permits were granted for 2,960 new dwellings, which is good one-third more than one year earlier. The number of permits granted for new detached houses tripled and that for detached houses grew by 66 per cent from one year back. The number of permits granted for residential blocks of flats also went up by 14 per cent.

Over the January to May period, the number of granted building permits grew by seven per cent from the previous year. The number of permits granted for residential buildings went up by 67 per cent. The cubic volume covered by permits for commercial and office buildings went down by nearly one fifth from the respective time period of the year before.

Volume of newbuilding went up by good 18 per cent in May

In May 2010, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production grew by 18.4 per cent year-on-year.

The volume of residential buildings increased by 77 per cent from one year before. In residential building the volume of terraced houses particularly doubled compared with the previous year’s May. The construction of residential blocks of flats increased by nearly 80 per cent and the volume of detached houses went up by good 70 per cent from one year back.

The volume of other than residential building contracted further. The drop from May 2009 amounted to nearly 10 per cent.

The volume of industrial and warehouse buildings contracted most, by good 40 per cent from last year's May. The construction of office buildings decreased by over 30 per cent from one year ago.
