Cubic volume covered by granted building permits decreased by over 31 per cent in December

In December 2010, building permits were granted for a total of 2.5 million cubic metres, which is 31.2 per cent less than one year ago. The fall was particularly due to the lower number of building permits granted for public service buildings and for commercial and office buildings. The number of building permits granted in 2010 was 7.5 per cent higher than in 2009. This is indicated by Statistics Finland’s preliminary data from statistics on building and dwelling production.

The cubic volume covered by permits for residential buildings went up by 2.7 per cent in December. The growth was biggest in the cubic volume of residential blocks of flats, which more than doubled compared with the pre-vious year's December. In contrast, the cubic volume of detached houses fell by over one third and that of terraced houses by nearly one half.

In December 2010, building permits were granted for 2,187 new dwellings, which is 3.9 per cent fewer than one year earlier. The number of permits granted for dwellings built in detached houses fell by over 38 per cent and the corresponding figure for terraced houses was good 54 per cent. The number of permits for dwellings built in residential blocks of flats grew by over one half.

In 2010 the cubic volume covered by granted building permits grew by 1.1 per cent from the previous year. The cubic volume covered by permits for residential buildings went up by 30.4 per cent. The cubic volume covered by permits for commercial and office buildings fell by 17.3 per cent and for public service buildings by 16.5 per cent.

Volume of newbuilding went up by nearly 26 per cent in December

In December 2010, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production was up by 25.8 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential building increased most, or by 42.2 per cent from one year before. The strong growth was due to the exceptionally low volume of residential building in 2009.

In residential building, strong growth continued especially in the volume of construction of terraced houses. Volumes have also grown briskly in the construction of residential blocks of flats and detached houses during the year. The volume of other than residential building construction grew by 11.9 per cent from December 2009.
