Cubic volume covered by granted building permits declined in August to October year-on-year

According to Statistics Finland, building permits were granted for a total of 8.2 million cubic metres in August to October 2016. The figure was 13.3 per cent lower than one year earlier. Measured by volume, fewer building permits were granted in all types of buildings than one year earlier.

Building permits granted for residential building decreased from one year back

The cubic volume of building permits granted for residential buildings in August to October was 2.9 million, which is 8.8 per cent lower than one year earlier. Permits granted for residential building diminished in all types of houses.

Building permits were granted for a total of 9,700 dwellings in August to October. The number grew somewhat from the year before.

Volume of building production is growing steadily

In August to October, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 7.5 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential building construction decreased by one per cent over the period. The volume of other than residential building construction went up by 14.9 per cent. Measured by volume, at the same time, 6.0 per cent more building projects and 9.3 per cent more residential building projects were started than one year earlier.

Data of the statistics on building and dwelling production

The published data are based on the building permit data of the Population Register Centre. The register data are supplemented as municipal building supervisors provide data to the Population Information System and the now published data can become revised. Due to the reviews of the Population Information System, the accrued data from one year back do not fully correspond to those of the present data and cause bias to the calculation of change percentages. The data still has undercoverage for the newest months and will be supplemented over coming months.
