Cubic volume covered by granted building permits increased in August to October from one year ago

According to Statistics Finland, building permits were granted for a total of 8.9 million cubic metres in August to October 2017. The cubic volume of building permits granted was 1.6 per cent higher than in the corresponding period one year previously. Measured by cubic volume, building permits for commercial and office buildings and public service buildings were clearly below the level of one year ago. Building permits for residential building continued to grow.

Residential building construction grew from one year ago

During August to October, building permits for residential buildings were granted for a total of 3.6 million cubic metres. The figure was 17.0 per cent higher than one year previously. The cubic volume of residential blocks of flats went up by 29.6 per cent. In contrast, the cubic volume of detached houses decreased by 6.1 per cent.

In August to October, building permits were granted for a total of 12,077 dwellings, growing by 17.0 per cent from the corresponding period of last year.

Volume of building production grew year-on-year

In August to October, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 3.9 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential building construction increased in the period by 6.3 per cent and that of other than residential building construction by 1.8 per cent. Measured by volume, at the same time, 2.0 per cent more building projects and 17.7 per cent more residential building projects were started than one year earlier.

The data of the statistics on building and dwelling production are based on the building permit data of the Population Register Centre. The register data are supplemented as municipal building supervisors provide data to the Population Information System and the now published data can become revised.
