Cubic volume of granted building permits decreased further year-on-year

According to Statistics Finland, 8.9 per cent fewer building permits were granted in the December to February period than in the corresponding period of the year before. Permits for a total of 7.5 million cubic metres were granted. Examined by building type, the cubic volume covered by permits granted for commercial and office buildings decreased most, by 64.6 per cent. The cubic volume granted for residential buildings went down by 20.0 per cent from the previous year.

Cubic volume granted for residential building lower than in the year before

In December to February, cubic metres covered by permits for residential buildings amounted to 2.5 million, while during the same period one year earlier, the figure was 3.1 million cubic metres. The cubic volumes of all building types decreased from the previous year: residential blocks of flats by 22.0 per cent, terraced and linked houses by 21.1 per cent and detached houses by 13.2 per cent.

In December to February, building permits were granted for a total of 8,322 dwellings, in the year before the corresponding figure was 10,907.

Growth in the volume of building production continued to peter out

In December to February, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 2.7 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential building construction increased by 0.9 per cent. The volume of other than residential building construction went up by 4.3 per cent. Measured by volume, 20.3 per cent fewer building projects than one year earlier were started in the same period.
