Building costs fell by 2.1 per cent in August

Building costs were 2.1 per cent lower in August 2009 than in August 2008. Labour costs in construction rose by 2.4 per cent in the year. By contrast, prices of materials fell by 3.2 per cent and those of other inputs by 6.8 per cent. This is indicated by the Building Cost Index of Statistics Finland.

From July to August, the total index of building costs remained unchanged. The prices for labour fell 0.1 procent from July. The prices of materials rose by 0.1 per cent, whereas those of other inputs fell by 0.4 per cent from July.

Due to non-uniform development in the prices of water pipes, the collection of prices has been widened in this commodity group. The effects can be seen in the building cost index starting from the August point figure. The index for the commodity group of water pipes covers both copper and plastic pipes.
