Turnover of construction enterprises contracted by nearly 12 per cent in the January to March period

In the January to March period, the turnover of construction enterprises fell by 11.9 per cent when compared with the corresponding three-month period of the year before. In March 2009, construction enterprises' turnover contracted by 5.3 per cent from the previous year. Examined by the revised standard industrial classification TOL 2008, the turnover of enterprises engaged in the construction of buildings contracted by 9.7 per cent, that of enterprises engaged in civil engineering by 1.1 per cent, and that of enterprises engaged in specialised construction activities by 1.6 per cent in March when compared with the corresponding period of the year before. These data derive from the preliminary index of turnover of construction compiled by Statistics Finland.

The sales volume of construction enterprises fell by 13.9 per cent year-on-year in the January to March period. Over the same period, the sales volume of building construction enterprises fell by 21.5 per cent and that of specialised construction enterprises by 10.2 per cent. The sales volume of civil engineering enterprises contracted by 1.7 per cent year-on-year in the January to March period.

In March 2009, the sales volume of construction enterprises fell by 7.2 per cent from March 2008. The sales volume of building construction enterprises fell in March by 12.4 per cent, that of civil engineering enterprises by 1.5 per cent, and that of specialised construction enterprises by 4.4 per cent from March 2008.

The volume index of enterprises' sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the turnover index series. In March 2009, the costs of building construction remained on level with March 2008 and those of civil engineering increased by 0.4 per cent from the corresponding period in 2008.
