Turnover of construction enterprises contracted by nearly 16 per cent in the July to September period

According to Statistics Finland, the turnover of construction enterprises fell by 15.6 per cent in the third quarter of 2009 when compared with the corresponding quarter twelve months back. Over the corresponding period, the turnover of construction of buildings fell by 17.9 per cent, that of specialised construction activities by 15.9 per cent and that of civil engineering by 8.6 per cent.

In September 2009, construction enterprises' turnover contracted by 14.7 per cent from the previous year. The contraction was largest in the activities of construction of buildings where turnover fell by 18.8 per cent in September, in specialised construction activities the decrease from the corresponding time period of the year before amounted to 13.3 per cent and in civil engineering to 7.3 per cent. These data derive from the preliminary index of turnover of construction compiled by Statistics Finland.

Year-on-year change in turnover in the 7-9/2009 and 7-9/2008 time periods, % (TOL 2008)

The sales volume of construction enterprises shrunk by 12.8 per cent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2009. The sales volume of building construction enterprises fell by 15.2 per cent, that of specialised construction activities by 13.2 per cent and that of civil engineering by 4.5 per cent.

In September 2009, the sales volume of construction enterprises diminished by 10.7 per cent from September 2008. The sales volume of building construction enterprises fell in September by 15.2 per cent, that of civil engineering enterprises by 3.1 per cent, and that of specialised construction activities by 9.4 per cent.

The volume index of enterprises' sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the turnover index series. In September 2009, the costs of building construction fell by 2.2 per cent and those of civil engineering by 4.4 per cent from September 2008.

Seasonal adjustment models have been revised

The seasonal adjustment models used have been revised in connection with the calculation of the indices of turnover for September. The revisions influence the seasonally adjusted and trend series, but not the original and working-day adjusted time series. The change percentages calculated from the original series have thus become only slightly revised, and this is due to new data having become available. For more detailed information about the revised treatment of seasonal adjustment, see http://tilastokeskus.fi/ajk/tiedotteet/2009/tiedote_019_2009-12-08_en.html.
