Crimes against life and health in 2016 to 2018

Crimes against life and health in 2016 to 2018

A majority of the reported offences are recorded by the police. During January to March 2018, a total of 176,100 offences were recorded by the police, which is 18.2 per cent down from early 2017. The drop is mainly caused by a change in the number of traffic infractions. In January to March 2018, a total of 2,400 offences were recorded by customs and 1,200 by the border guard. Compared with January to March 2017, the offences recorded by the customs increased by 16.5 per cent and those recoded the border guard grew by 0.5 per cent. The increase in the number of offences recorded by customs was caused, for example, by recorded smuggling offences.

The reform of fine legislation on 1 December 2016 affects the updating of statistics on criminal offences especially in terms of traffic offences. Fines from automatic traffic control are updated into the police PATJA system with a delay of around 80 days. For this reason, the publication time of the statistics has been moved by a few months in 2018.

The statistics on Offences known to the police and on Coercive measures were combined in March 2015. Data released prior to that can be found on the old home pages of the statistics. The web pages of the statistics on Offences known to the police: http://www.tilastokeskus.fi/til/polrik/index_en.html and of the statistics on Coercive measures: http://tilastokeskus.fi/til/pkei/index_en.html
