One third of electricity was produced in combined heat and power production in 2004

According to Statistics Finland's statistics on production of electricity and heat, electricity produced in Finland amounted to 82.2 terawatt hours (TWh) or 82.2 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) in 2004. District heat production totalled 33.4 TWh and industrial heat 62.1 TWh.

Hydro power and wind power were made commensurate with fuels according to directly obtained electricity (3.6 PJ/TWh) and nuclear energy at the efficiency ratio of 33 per cent from produced nuclear power (10.91 TJ/GWh).

In 2004, 34 per cent of electricity was produced in combined heat and power production. Twenty-seven per cent of electricity was nuclear power. Twenty-one per cent of electricity was produced by fuel-based separate production of electricity and 18 per cent by hydro power. Wind power accounted for 0.1 per cent of electricity production.

Of all fuels coal was used most in production of electricity and heat in 2004. Its proportion was 24 per cent. Black liquor and other concentrated liquor accounted for 21 per cent and natural gas for 19 per cent. The most used fuels in combined heat and power production were black liquor, which made up 31 per cent, and natural gas, 24 per cent. The biggest fuel by far in separate production of electricity was coal. Its proportion was 66 per cent. Nearly 80 per cent of heat was produced in connection with combined heat and power production. In separate production of heat oil was consumed most, 34 per cent of fuels used.
