During sweltering July in 2010 Finnish tourists made domestic trips and visited neighbouring countries

Finland experienced an exceptionally hot July in 2010. Indeed, the holiday trips of many resident tourists were then headed to domestic destinations or to the neighbouring countries of Sweden and Estonia. Finnish residents made 1,071,000 domestic trips with paid accommodation, which is nearly 30 per cent more than in July of the year before. Cruises to Sweden increased by 36 per cent from the previous year. In tourism to Estonia, the number of leisure trips with overnight stays in the destination country went up and now showed 34 per growth from the respective period of the year before.

In July Finnish residents made 648,000 overnight leisure trips abroad. In all, 542,000 of them included one or more overnights in the country of destination, thirty per cent in Estonia and twelve per cent in Sweden. Most of the cruises including overnights on board only were to Sweden and Estonia.

Finnish residents made 4.7 million leisure trips in Finland. This is 24 per cent up on the corresponding period in the year before. Most of the trips, or 3.7 million, included free accommodation at one’s own free-time residence, with relatives or friends or in some other type of free accommodation.

These preliminary data are based on Statistics Finland’s Finnish Travel Survey for which 1,415 persons aged 15 to 74 permanently resident in Finland were interviewed in Augusti.

The final annual data on the Finnish Travel Survey are published on the homepage of the statistics in July following the statistical reference year. In addition, quarterly preliminary data are published in connection with the monthly publication Tourism Statistics (accommodation statistics) in six weeks from the end of the relevant quarter.
