Enterprises' research and development expenditure growing

According to Statistics Finland, research and development expenditure amounted to EUR 6.9 billion in 2020. Expenditure increased by EUR 218 million from the year before which represents a growth of 3.2 per cent. Growth occurred only in enterprises where R&D expenditure went up by 5.4 per cent. R&D expenditure in the higher education sector remained on level with 2019, while expenditure contracted by 2.8 per cent in the government sector. All in all, the growth rate of R&D expenditure was one percentage point slower than in the previous year.

The GDP share of R&D expenditure rose in 2020 and was 2.9 per cent, in 2019 the share was 2.8 per cent. In 2021, R&D expenditure is estimated to grow by around EUR 220 million and the GDP share is estimated to remain on level with 2020.
