Government R&D funding falls by EUR 55 million in 2012
In the 2012 Government Budget, the total appropriations and outlays for research and development amount to EUR 2,010 million. According to Statistics Finland, R&D funding falls by nearly EUR 55 million from the previous year. The reductions mainly concern the administrative branches of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy, and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. The share of public R&D funding of GDP falls to 1.0 per cent.
Government budget appropriations or outlays for R&D in 2011–2012
The EUR 41 million reduction in the funding of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy comes almost entirely from cuts in the outlays and appropriations for technology of Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation. R&D funding of Tekes falls from EUR 590 million to EUR 552 million. Good EUR 11 million less is earmarked for R&D under the administrative branch of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. Funding under the Ministry of Education and Culture remains unchanged. In the administrative branch of the Ministry of Education and Culture, funding for university research grows by EUR 28 million and totals EUR 583 million. By contrast, the funding for science granted by the Academy of Finland falls by EUR 29 million to EUR 321 million. R&D funding from the Budget for government research institutes totals EUR 306 million.
R&D funding of VTT, the Technical Research Centre of Finland, goes up from the previous year by just under EUR 7 million to EUR 93 million. In relative terms, the funding of the Finnish Geodetic Institute grows most, or by 45 per cent, from under EUR 4 million to over EUR 5 million. The research institutes estimate that the amount of extra-budgetary research funding rises to EUR 286 million, which is EUR 15 million more than in the year before. Research funding received from the European Union grows by nearly EUR 4 million to a total of EUR 46 million.
