A total of 229 persons died in road traffic accidents and 519 were seriously injured in 2014

According to Statistics Finland, 5,324 road traffic accidents involving personal injury occurred in 2014. In all, 229 persons died in accidents and 6,705 were injured, of which 519 persons or 7.7 per cent seriously 1) . In 2014, there were 29 fewer fatalities than one year before and 24 more injured persons.

Examined by age group, the number of road traffic fatalities went down in all groups except for the age group of children aged 0 to 14. The number of deaths decreased most in the over 64 age group, where deaths numbered 56. The figure is 17 lower than one year before. The number of road traffic fatalities among adults (aged 25 to 64) decreased by 12 persons, being 119 in 2014. Road traffic fatalities of young people (aged 15 to 24) went down by four to 44. Road traffic fatalities of children aged under 15 numbered ten, which was four more than in 2013.

In 2014, a total of 121 passenger car drivers died, which is 31 down from the year before. The number of road traffic fatalities of moped riders and motorcyclists also diminished. Three moped riders and 17 motorcyclists died in road traffic accidents. Compared with 2013, two fewer moped riders and seven fewer motorcyclists died. Altogether, 36 pedestrians were killed in road traffic accidents in 2014, which is two more than in the year before. The number of cyclists' road traffic deaths was 27, or seven more than in 2013.

During 2014, altogether 519 persons were seriously injured in road traffic. Of them, 175 were passenger car drivers and 80 passengers. Sixty-nine motorcyclist and six passengers were seriously injured. The numbers of seriously injured pedestrians was 38, that of cyclists 58 and moped riders 47.

Examined by age group, the relative share of seriously injured persons in road traffic accidents among all injured was biggest in the over 64 age group, whose share of all injured persons in the same age group was 12 per cent. A total of 111 persons aged over 64 were seriously injured. In younger age groups, the relative share of seriously injured in all road traffic injuries was smaller.

In 2014, the number of alcohol-related accidents involving personal injury was 535. Of these, 460 were drunken driving accidents. In all, 41 persons died in accidents and 576 were injured, of which 69 per cent seriously. Fatalities went down by 16 and injured by 100 from the year before.


1) A seriously injured person refers to a person involved in a road traffic accident who is classified as being seriously injured in accordance with the AIS Abbreviated Injury Scale (AAAM, Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine). In addition to the road traffic accident data, the data of the care register of the National Institute for Health and Welfare were used in the classification of injuries
