Road traffic accidents claimed 23 lives in December

According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 313 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in December. In them, 23 persons were killed and 384 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 11 higher and that of persons injured 32 lower than in December 2017. The data were compared with the previous year's preliminary data.

Of the persons who were killed, 17 travelled by passenger car and two by lorry. Pedestrians killed in road traffic accidents numbered three and cyclists one. Among those who died, 15 were men and eight were women.

A total of 4,281 road traffic accidents involving personal injury happened in January to December period. In them, 223 persons were killed and 5,286 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 11 higher and that of persons injured 284 lower than in the corresponding period of 2017. Of the persons who were killed, 143 travelled by passenger car, six by van, three by moped, 24 by motorcycle, three by lorry and four by bus. Pedestrians killed numbered 21 and cyclists 14. In addition, five other road users were killed.
