Road traffic accidents claimed 23 lives in August

According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 422 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in August. In them, 23 persons were killed and 507 persons injured. The number of persons killed was two higher and that of persons injured 36 lower than in August 2018. The data were compared with the previous year's preliminary data.

Of the persons who were killed, 12 travelled by passenger car and five by motorcycle. Pedestrians killed in road traffic accidents numbered one and cyclists two. In addition, three other road users were killed. Among those who died, 17 were men and six were women.

A total of 2,595 road traffic accidents involving personal injury happened in January to August period. In them, 145 persons were killed and 3,298 persons injured. The number of persons killed was six higher and that of persons injured 283 lower than in the corresponding period of 2018. Of the persons who were killed, 84 travelled by passenger car, six by van, two by moped, 20 by motorcycle and three by lorry. Pedestrians killed numbered nine and cyclists 15. In addition, six other road users were killed.
