Farmers’ risk of accidents at work has decreased during the last ten years
Corrected on 18 June 2020. The corrections are indicated in red.
The accident incidence rate at work among own-account workers in agriculture has fallen by 2.5 per cent in 2009 to 2018. These data derive from Statistics Finland's occupational accidents statistics, in which two five-year periods were compared with each other. In the 2009 to 2013 period, farmers had 19,020 accidents at work resulting in a disability of at least four days, which is an average of 4,924 accidents 100,000 farmers. In the 2014 to 2018 period, farmers had 15,228 accidents at work resulting in a disability of at least four days, which is an average of 4,802 accidents 100,000 farmers. The most recent occupational accident statistics contain data on the accidents at work of wage and salary earners and farmers in 2018. The statistics also contain data on the accidents at work that occurred to other self-employed persons, and on wage and salary earners’ commuting accidents.

In 2018, wage and salary earners had a total of 102,275 accidents at work for which insurance companies paid compensation. Disability of at least four days resulted from 35,587 of these accidents. The total number of wage and salary earners’ accidents at work remained on level with the previous year.
Compared with the year before, the number of occupational accidents among wage and salary earners resulting in a disability of at least four days decreased slightly (-1.8%). Measured with the accident incidence rate, the risk of occupational accidents also declined compared to the previous year (-4.2%). In 2018, a total of 1,600 occupational accidents resulting in at least four days' absence from work occurred per 100,000 wage and salary earners, while the corresponding figure in 2017 was 1,671.
As in earlier years, the work of own-account workers in agriculture, i.e. farmers, clearly continues to be more risk prone than the average work of wage and salary earners, as the accident incidence rate calculated for them is over 3-fold when compared with wage and salary earners. In 2018, the Farmers' Social Insurance Institution paid out compensation to farmers for a total of 4,202 occupational accidents, of which 2,829 led to at least four days' absence from work.
In 2018, a total of 37 persons died at the place of work or while commuting. Of these fatal accidents at work, 14 occurred to wage and salary earners, two to farmers and four to other self-employed persons. In addition, 12 fatal accidents took place while commuting, of which 11 occurred to wage and salary earners and one to other self-employed persons than farmers. The number of fatal accidents at work increased clearly from the year before, as in 2017 a total of 30 persons died at olace of work or while commuting.
