Change in the number of jobs in industries with the highest increase and decrease in the five-year period from 2007 to 2012
In 2012, there were around 2.3 million jobs in Finland. In employment statistics, one employed person forms one job. The industry of jobs is defined based on the Standard Industrial Classification 2008. Here, data are presented using the 2-digit level. Data are available with the same classification from 2007.
From 2007 to 2012, the number of jobs has decreased by 29,200 or 1.2 per cent. In 2012, the biggest industries measured by the number of jobs were human health activities (182,100 jobs), education (168,100), and retail trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles (157,500).
In 2007 to 2012, the biggest changes in the number of jobs occurred in residential care activities (+13,900 jobs) and manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (–14,200). When viewing manufacturing industries or categories 10 to 33 (main category C of the classification), the number of jobs has decreased by 76,300 or 19.2 per cent between 2007 and 2012. In 2012, there were 321,200 jobs in manufacturing. Industries 86 to 88 of human health and social work activities (main category Q) have grown by 32,100 jobs or 9.1 per cent. In 2012, there were 383,600 jobs in human health and social work activities.
From 2007 to 2012, the number of jobs decreased every year in nine industries. In the group of declining industries, the biggest decreases occurred in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (–14,200 jobs). The next largest decline was in manufacture of paper and paper products (–7,400), and in manufacture of basic metals (–3,300).
There were a total of 11 growing industries, where the number of jobs has increased every year between 2007 and 2012. In these industries the biggest increase was seen in the number of jobs in residential care activities (+13,900 jobs). The second and third largest growth occurred in food and beverage service activities (+9,800) and services to buildings and landscape activities (+8,300).
Differences between regions
Viewed by region, the total number of jobs in 2007 to 2012 has grown only in Uusimaa (+11,200 jobs), North Ostrobothnia (+460) and Ostrobothnia (+50 jobs). The number of jobs has decreased most in Varsinais-Suomi (–8,400).
All regions have industries where the number of jobs has decreased and industries where the number has increased. During 2007 to 2012, the increase in the number of jobs focused in all regions almost solely on human health activities, residential care activities, and social work activities without accommodation. The biggest exception is Satakunta, where the number of jobs has grown most in food and beverage service activities (+910 jobs).
By region, the industries with most decline vary considerably. In South and Central Ostrobothnia, in Ostrobothnia, in Etelä-Savo and Pohjois-Savo, and in North Karelia, most jobs have been lost in crop and animal production, hunting and related service activities. In Pirkanmaa, North Ostrobothnia, Uusimaa and Varsinais-Suomi, the decline has been deepest in manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products. In Central Finland, Kymenlaakso and Kainuu, the biggest drops have occurred in manufacture of paper and paper products.
