Unemployment rate 8.8 per cent in June
According to Statistics Finland’s labour Force Survey, employment and unemployment were in June near the level where they were one year earlier. There were 8,000 fewer employed than in June of the previous year. The unemployment rate diminished by 0.2 percentage points to 8.8 per cent.
Unemployment rate and trend of unemployment rate 1989/01 – 2010/06
In June 2010, the number of employed persons was 2,557,000, which was 8,000 lower than a year earlier. There were 28,000 more employed men and 37,000 fewer employed women than in June 2009. The number of employed persons decreased most in the area of the Regional State Administrative Agency (AVI) of Southwestern Finland.
In June, the employment rate , that is, the proportion of the employed among persons aged 15 to 64, stood at 70.9 per cent, which was 0.5 percentage points lower than one year earlier. Adjusted for seasonal and random variation, the trend of the employment rate was 67.7 per cent. Men’s employment rate rose from last year’s June by 1.2 percentage points to 73.1 per cent and women’s employment rate fell by 2.1 percentage points to 68.7 per cent.
According to the Labour Force Survey, there were 248,000 unemployed in June 2010, i.e. 8,000 fewer than in June of the year before. The number of unemployed men decreased by 25,000 and that of unemployed women increased 18,000.
At 8.8 per cent, the unemployment rate was 0.2 percentage points lower in June than one year earlier. The trend of the unemployment rate was 8.2 per cent in June. The unemployment rate for men fell by 1.8 percentage points to 8.4 per cent, and that for women grew by 1.4 percentage points to 9.3 per cent. In June 2010, the unemployment rate among young people aged 15 to 24 was 21.6 per cent, which was 0.9 percentage points lower than in the previous year’s June. The trend of the unemployment rate among young people was 21.1 per cent. The unemployment rate was lowest in the area of Southern Finland AVI, where it stood at 8.2 per cent, and highest, 10.9 per cent, in the area of Eastern Finland AVI.
The number of 15 to 74-year-olds not in the labour force grew by 35,000.
N.B . The latest trend figures, which are partly based on projections, should be viewed with certain reservations.

Labour Force Survey data for the second quarter of 2010
The average number of employed persons in the second quarter of 2010 was 2,485,000, or 12,000 lower than in the corresponding quarter of 2009. Employment decreased in the second quarter in the economic activity group of manufacturing (–15,000), and in human health and social work (–15,000). The number of employed persons went up in trade (8,000), education (7,000), transport and storage activities (7,000) and in professional, scientific and technical activities (6,000).
The average number of unemployed persons in the second quarter of the year was 263,000, which was 1,000 lower than in the April to June period of 2009. The unemployment rate in the second quarter of the year was 9.6 per cent, equalling the rate of the respective period of 2009.
In the second quarter of 2010 the number of hours worked by employed persons was up by 24 million, or 2.4 per cent, when compared with the respective quarter of 2009.

Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy
At the end of June 2010, there were altogether 276,000 persons registered, in accordance with the Unemployment Security Act and the Employment Office Regulations, as job seekers at the employment and economic development offices . The number of unemployed job seekers was the same as in June 2009.
Unemployment grew from the previous year in the areas of five Employment and Economic Development Centres (ELY). The number of unemployed job seekers increased most in Åland (20%), Varsinais-Suomi (10%) and Uusimaa (6%). Respectively, the number of unemployed job seekers decreased most in Kainuu (–11%), North Karelia -(10%), South Ostrobothnia (–10%) and Lapland (–8%). At the end of June, the number of temporarily laid off persons registered at the employment and economic development offices was 17,000, which was 11,000 lower than twelve months earlier.
The total number of persons covered by labour market policy measures was 83,000 at the end of June, which was 7,000 higher than in June of the year before. Altogether 2.9 per cent of the labour force was covered by labour market policy measures.
There were 39,000 unemployed job seekers aged under 25 registered at the employment and economic development offices. Their number was 1,000 lower than in last year's June. During this June, 33,000 new vacancies were reported to the employment and economic development offices, which was 4,000 more than in June 2009.
