Unemployment rate 6.6 per cent in August

According to Statistics Finland’s Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons in August was 177,000, which was 20,000 lower than one year ago. At 6.6 per cent, the unemployment rate was 0.8 percentage points lower than one year earlier. The number of employed persons was 30,000 higher than in last year's August.

In August 2011, the number of employed persons was 2,522,000, which was 30,000 higher than a year earlier. There were 25,000 more employed men and 6,000 more employed women than in August 2010.

This August, the employment rate , that is, the proportion of the employed among persons aged 15 to 64, stood at 69.8 per cent, which was 0.9 percentage points higher than one year before. Adjusted for seasonal and random variation, the trend of the employment rate was 68.9 per cent. From last year’s August, men’s employment rate rose by 1.4 percentage points to 71.0 per cent and women’s by 0.4 percentage points to 68.6 per cent.

According to the Labour Force Survey, there were 177,000 unemployed in August 2011, i.e. 20,000 fewer than in August of the year before. The number of unemployed men was 91,000 and that of women 86,000.

At 6.6 per cent, the unemployment rate was 0.8 percentage points lower in August than one year earlier. Men’s unemployment rate was 6.5 per cent and women’s 6.6 per cent. The trend of the unemployment rate was 7.7 per cent. This August, the unemployment rate among young people aged 15 to 24 was 13.0 per cent, which was 1.5 percentage points lower than in August 2010. The trend of the unemployment rate among young people was 19.7 per cent.

Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy

At the end of August 2011, there were altogether 235,000 persons registered in accordance with the Employment Office Regulations as job seekers at the employment and economic development offices . The number of unemployed job seekers was 18,000 lower than in August 2010.

Unemployment decreased from the previous year in the areas of all Employment and Economic Development Centres (ELY). In Åland, the number of unemployed job seekers grew from the previous year (9%). The number of unemployed job-seekers decreased most in South Ostrobothnia (–14%), Häme (–12%) and Pirkanmaa (–11%). At the end of August, the number of temporarily laid off persons registered at the employment and economic development offices was 9,000, which was 5,000 lower than twelve months earlier.

At the end of August, the number of persons covered by labour market policy measures totalled 103,000, which was 5,000 higher than in August of the year before. Altogether 3.8 per cent of the labour force was covered by labour market policy measures.

There were 30,000 unemployed job seekers aged under 25 registered at the employment and economic development offices. Their number was 4,000 lower than in last year's August. During this August, 49,000 new vacancies were reported to the employment and economic development offices, which is 7,000 more than in August 2010.
