Men’s unemployment continued to be higher than women’s. In 2011, men’s unemployment rate was 8.4 per cent, or 0.7 percentage points lower than in 2010. Women’s unemployment rate decreased by 0.5 percentage points to 7.1 per cent.

Young people’s labour force status improved slightly. The rate of unemployment for young people aged 15 to 24 was 20.1 per cent in 2011, having been 21.4 per cent in 2010. However, unemployment is still clearly more widespread among young people than in the best years of 2007 and 2008 of the 2000s when young people’s unemployment rate was 16.5 per cent.

In 2011, employed persons numbered 2,474,000, or 27,000 more than in 2010. The number of employed persons increased most in human health and social work activities (+17,000). The largest decrease was seen in the activity group of transport and warehousing (–9,000).

The rate of employment for the population aged 15 to 64 was 68.6 per cent in 2011. In the previous year, it stood at 67.8 per cent.

The number of hours worked by the employed was 0.9 per cent higher in 2011 than in 2010. The number of hours worked per employed person was roughly on level with twelve months earlier.

These data are annual averages from the Labour Force Survey for the year 2011, which have been published in the database tables of Statistics Finland’s Labour Force Survey: http://pxweb2.stat.fi/database/StatFin/Tym/tyti/tyti_en.asp . The time series tables of the Labour Force Survey contain data on the labour force status of population aged 15–74 years according to for instance, age, status in employment and industry.

Annual Labour Force Survey data will next be released in 2012 on 6 March, 11 September and 6 November. These releases will contain more detailed information on employment and unemployment in 2011.
