Unemployment rate 8.7 per cent in January

According to Statistics Finland’s Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons in January 2013 was 228,000, which was 25,000 higher than one year ago. The unemployment rate was 8.7 per cent, having been 7.8 per cent in January of the year before. There were 6,000 fewer employed persons than in January of the previous year.

In January 2013, the number of employed persons was 2,402,000, which was 6,000 lower than a year earlier (margin of error ±31,000). The number of employed persons decreased in the public sector but grew in the private sector compared with January 2012.

In January, the employment rate, that is, the proportion of the employed among persons aged 15 to 64, was 66.9 per cent, or the same as one year earlier. Men’s employment rate was 67.1 per cent and women’s 66.7 per cent. Adjusted for seasonal and random variation, the trend of the employment rate was 68.7 per cent.

According to the Labour Force Survey, there were 228,000 unemployed in January 2013, i.e. 25,000 more than in January of the year before (margin of error ±18,000). The number of unemployed men was 130,000 and that of women 97,000.

At 8.7 per cent, the unemployment rate in January was 0.9 percentage points higher than one year earlier. Men’s unemployment rate was 9.6 per cent and women’s 7.6 per cent. The trend of the unemployment rate was 8.0 per cent. This January the unemployment rate among young people aged 15 to 24 was 21.0 per cent, which was 0.6 percentage points higher than in last year’s January. The trend of the unemployment rate among young people was 19.5 per cent.

Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy

At the end of January 2013, there were altogether 292,000 persons registered in accordance with the Employment Office Regulations as job seekers at the employment and economic development offices. The number of unemployed job seekers was 34,000 higher than in January 2012.

Unemployment increased from the previous year's January in the areas of all Employment and Economic Development Centres; most in Varsinais-Suomi (19%), Pirkanmaa (18%), Uusimaa (16%), North Ostrobothnia (16%) and Åland (18%). At the end of January, the number of temporarily laid off persons registered at the employment and economic development offices was 25,000, which was 6,000 more than twelve months earlier.

The number of persons engaged in labour market policy services totalled 100,000 at the end of January, which was 8,000 fewer than in January of the year before. Altogether 3.8 per cent of the labour force was covered by labour market policy services.

There were 39,000 unemployed job seekers aged under 25 registered at the employment and economic development offices. Their number was 6,000 higher than in last year's January. During this January, 55,000 new vacancies were reported to the employment and economic development offices, which is 4,000 fewer than in January 2012.
