Unemployment rate 8.9 per cent in June

According to Statistics Finland’s Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons in June 2017 was 250,000, which was 14,000 lower than one year ago. The unemployment rate was 8.9 per cent, having been 9.3 per cent in June of the year before. There were 15,000 more employed than in June of the previous year. The unemployment rate was 9.9 per cent in the second quarter (April to June), having been 10.0 per cent in the respective quarter of 2016.

In June 2017, the number of employed persons was 2,573,000 (margin of error ±34,000), which was 15,000 more than a year earlier. There were 17,000 fewer employed men and 33,000 more employed women than in June 2016.

In June 2017, the employment rate , that is, the proportion of the employed among persons aged 15 to 64, stood at 72.5 per cent, having been 72.0 per cent one year earlier. The employment rate for men fell by 1.3 percentage point from last year’s June to 73.5 per cent. Women's employment rate rose by 2.2 percentage points to 71.5 per cent. Adjusted for seasonal and random variation, the trend of the employment rate was 69.2 per cent.

According to Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey, there were 250,000 unemployed in June 2017 (margin of error ±20,000), i.e. 14,000 fewer than one year earlier. The number of unemployed men was 136,000 and that of women 114,000.

At 8.9 per cent, the unemployment rate was 0.5 percentage points lower in June than one year earlier. Men’s unemployment rate was 9.2 per cent and women’s 8.4 per cent. The trend of the unemployment rate was 8.7 per cent.

In June, there were a total of 628,000 young people aged 15 to 24 . Of them, 337,000 were employed and 93,000 unemployed. The number of young people in the active population, i.e. the employed and unemployed in total, was 430,000. In June, the unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 24, that is, the proportion of the unemployed among the labour force, stood at 21.7 per cent, which was 1.7 percentage points higher than one year previously. The trend of the unemployment rate among young people was 20.7 per cent. The share of unemployed young people aged 15 to 24 among the population of the same age was 14.9 per cent.

There were 1,290,000 persons in the inactive population in June 2017, which was 4,000 more than one year earlier. Of the inactive population, 159,000 persons were in disguised unemployment , which was slightly fewer than in June 2016.

Labour Force Survey data for the second quarter of 2017

In the second quarter of 2017, the average number of employed persons was 2,494,000, or 17,000 higher than in the corresponding period in 2016. The number of employed persons increased most in the financial, insurance and real estate activities (K, L), as well as in education (P).

The number of hours worked by employed persons was 3.4 per cent lower in the second quarter of 2017 than twelve months previously.

The average number of unemployed persons in the second quarter of 2017 was 275,000, which was the same as in the April to June period of 2016. The unemployment rate was 9.9 per cent in the second quarter of 2017, having been 10.0 per cent one year earlier.

In the second quarter of 2017, the number of persons in the inactive population was 1,342,000, which was 15,000 fewer than a year earlier. Of the inactive population, 139,000 persons were in disguised unemployment , which was 5,000 fewer than in the corresponding period of 2016.

Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment

At the end of June 2017, there were altogether 320,000 persons registered in accordance with the Employment Office Regulations as unemployed job seekers at the employment and economic development offices . The number of unemployed job seekers was 46,000 lower than in June 2016.

Unemployment fell in June from the corresponding period in 2016 in the areas of all Employment and Economic Development Centres: most in Pirkanmaa (–22%), Kainuu (–19%), Central Finland (–18%) and South Ostrobothnia (–16%). At the end of June, the number of fully laid off persons registered at the employment and economic development offices was 13,000, which was 8,000 fewer than twelve months earlier.

The number of persons engaged in services included in the activation rate totalled 108,000 at the end of June, which was the same as in June of the year before. Altogether, 3.8 per cent of the labour force was covered by labour market policy services.

There were 46,000 unemployed job seekers aged under 25 registered at the employment and economic development offices. Their number was 8,000 lower than in last year's June. During this June, 44,000 new vacancies were reported to the employment and economic development offices, which was 5,000 more than in June 2016.
