Finland's preliminary population figure 5,442,322 at the end of August

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of August was 5,442,322. Over the January to August period, Finland's population increased by 15,650 persons, which is 1,150 persons less than in the corresponding period of the year before. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 10,750 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 4,900 persons.

Population increase by month 2011–2013*

According to the preliminary statistics for the January to August period, 19,350 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 8,650 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 1,000 lower and the number of emigrants was 600 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 5,750 of the immigrants and 6,100 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

During the January to August period 39,400 children were born, which is 1,000 children less than in the corresponding period of 2012. The number of deaths was 34,500, which is 200 lower than one year earlier.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 179,400 over the January to August period. Compared with the previous January to August period, the decrease was 6,750 migrations according to the municipal division of 2013.
