Finland's preliminary population figure 5,456,360 at the end of April
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of April was 5,456,360. Over the January to April period, Finland's population increased by 5,100 persons, which is 1,100 persons fewer than in the preliminary data for the corresponding period of the year before. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 4,000 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 1,100 persons.
Population increase by month 2012–2014*
According to the preliminary statistics for the January to April period, 8,250 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 4,250 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 1,200 lower and the number of emigrants 150 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 2,050 of the immigrants and 2,800 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
During the January to April period, 18,600 children were born, which is 500 children fewer than in the corresponding period of 2013. The number of deaths was 17,500, which is 750 lower than one year earlier.
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 69,500 over the January to April period. Compared with the previous January to April period, the decrease was 1,950 migrations according to the municipal division of 2014.
