Finland's preliminary population figure 5,465,290 at the end of August
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of August was 5,465,290. Over the January to August period, Finland's population increased by 14,020 persons, which is 2,740 persons fewer than for the corresponding period of the year before. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 9,860 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 4,160 persons.
Population increase by month 2012–2014*
According to the preliminary statistics for the January to August period, 19,230 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 9,370 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 1,950 lower and the number of emigrants 140 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 5,700 of the immigrants and 6,280 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
During the January to August period, 38,770 children were born, which is 610 children fewer than in the corresponding period of 2013. The number of deaths was 34,610, which is 50 higher than one year earlier.
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 178,520 over the January to August period. Compared with the previous January to August period, the decrease was 2,270 migrations according to the municipal division of 2014.
