Finland's preliminary population figure 5 475 450 at the end of January
According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of January was 5,475,450. During January Finland's population increased by 1,160 persons, which is 170 persons less than in the preliminary data for the January year before. The reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 1,330 higher than that of emigrants. There was no natural population growth, since deaths exceeded births by 170 persons.
Population increase by month 2012–2015*
According to the preliminary statistics for January, 2 380 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 1 050 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 120 lower and the number of emigrants 310 lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 970 of the immigrants and 770 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
During January 4 630 children were born, which is 170 children fewer than in the corresponding period of 2014. The number of deaths was 4 800, which is 180 higher than one year earlier.
According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 14 900 during January. Compared with the previous January, the decrease was 4 100 migrations according to the municipal division of 2015.
